What a prenuptial agreement does
A marital property agreement (äktenskapsförord) makes named assets private property, so they are left out of the division if you divorce or one of you dies. It must be registered with the Swedish Tax Agency to be valid.
In Sweden this document is called Äktenskapsförord. It is worth learning the Swedish term: it is what a bank, a housing association, an employer or an authority will ask you for, and searching for the English name alone will often turn up rules from another country that do not apply here. The rules come from The Marriage Code, Äktenskapsbalken (1987:230), and the questions you answer while creating the document are the ones that statute makes relevant.
When you need one
- One of you owns a company, a property abroad or an inheritance you want to keep separate.
- You are marrying later in life and each have children from before.
- You are moving to Sweden and want the same protection you had at home.

Which law applies to a prenuptial agreement in Sweden?
The Marriage Code, Äktenskapsbalken (1987:230). The template follows it, and the questions you answer are the ones that statute makes relevant. Swedish law is what governs the document regardless of where you are from or where you signed it.
Is it valid if I am not a Swedish citizen?
Yes. What matters for a prenuptial agreement is Swedish law and the connection to Sweden, not your citizenship. You do not need a Swedish personal identity number to create the document, and you do not need Swedish BankID to sign it, because e-signing works with email verification as well.

How do we sign it?
Online, free, and from anywhere. Everyone who has to sign gets a link by email, verifies themselves, and signs. Swedish BankID is offered but never required, which is what makes this work for people who have just moved here or who sign from abroad. You can also print it and sign on paper if you prefer.
What if it turns out to be wrong for my situation?
Tell us and we will correct it at no cost. If a document does not fit your circumstances, the honest answer is sometimes that you need advice rather than a template, and we will say so — you can book a lawyer instead of buying the document.
Does it have to be registered?
Yes. A Swedish marital property agreement only takes effect once it has been registered with the Swedish Tax Agency (Skatteverket). We produce the document ready to be sent in; registration itself is done by the agency.
